5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Set of Mugs
I ordered these mugs for my boyfriend as a partial Christmas gift. I was a little nervous about the purchase because I could not judge the weight of them, but I took a chance.

Boy am I glad I did! They are nice and sturdy, well made, and a definite asset. They are kept in the freezer so he or company can have a nice, frosty mug of beer any time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy for the price
These glasses are very durable and perfect for keeping in the freezer to use when you're looking for a nice frosted mug to drink your beer from.I thought that since they were 16oz size that I would have trouble getting them to fit in my dishwasher, but they fit fine.I would recommend these to anyone, especially those of you that have a bar in your house or garage.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought these because of the reviews
Thank you for your reviews, I cancelled an order for other mugs to buy these. Heavy, high-quality, and flawless on arrival. Thanks again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best German Oktoberfest Music
As a real Bavarian (living in Munich, Bavaria) this one of the best Oktoberfest music compilations.
Listen, take a big glass of beer (1 Liter) and enjoy !!!!!!!!!!

    Greetings from Munich, Bavaria

5-0 out of 5 stars Ein Prosit Der Gemuetlichkeit!!
This is an "ausgezeichnet" (excellent) CD for the price! I was born and raised in a German family and some of my fondest memories of childhood center around the Oktoberfests we always went to. The endless rows of tables of men in lederhosen (yes, I had a pair myself) and women in Bavarian dirndls rocking back and forth, holding enormous bierkrugs and singing many of the songs on this CD, still stay fresh in my mind. This CD is an excellent value, all around. So push this one into your player,
lift high your bierkrug, and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality CD.
This CD does not feature crowd noise in the background - just nice clear music.About half the selections are instrumentals. There were no lyrics enclosed, which disappointed me.Nice selection overall. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great looking sturdy glasses at a good price.
These glasses are great looking, very sturdy and good for daily use also. If you pour a can of soda or something else, then you'll have nearly 1/3rd of the glass empty since its a 22.5 oz glass.

It's comparatively cheaper in amazon, but I noticed some small not-so-perfect things like
    - very small bubbles near the tip of the glass, not visible from the distance
    - tip of couple of glasses is not fully uniform and there's a small bump on them. So, if you drink from that location, your lips will feel a little bump but you can't be hurt.

I guess cheap price will have to be compensated some place. ut, overall a great buy and I would recommend at this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
Fabulous glasses that do the job. I believe they are nicer and better than mugs. Dishwasher safe, and you can just about get 2 12oz. cans in one glass. If you like beer and prefer to drink or serve besides out of a can or bottle, get this set. Thank you Amazon.

Spiegelau's Vino Grande series of glasses is part of a connoisseur line designed with the characteristics of each beverage in mind. This elegant, footed glass is attractive enough to serve with microbrews for summer meals and unpretentious enough to turn a canned brew on the front stoop into a festive occasion. Tap the glass gently with your fingernail and you'll hear the distinctive ping of fine crystal. This short-stemmed glass measure 7 inches high and has a deep tapered shape that's ideal for setting a good head on your beer--or root beer, if that's more to your liking. The glasses are billed as dishwasher-safe and are sturdy enough for everyday use, as proven by their use in restaurants. --Irene Svete ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beer a plenty
These glasses serve the purpose for beer, which happens to be 12 fluid ounces.Although, it is exactly 12 fluid ounces so you may want to have a sip before you pour.I love the design and think they're great, the only thing that i didn't prefer was the rim of the glass is very thin, i can see a drunken buddy smashing a bottle through the side of the glass after he has had one to many.I'd recommend them and the collins glasses that come with the combo buy.not a bad deal

3-0 out of 5 stars Dainty beer glasses
These were smaller than I expected.I prefer a more robust glass when serving beer.So far, it seems that the "Grande" in Spiegelau's Vino Grande line is a misnomer. These glasses and the bonus set ofVino Grande highballs that came with it are quite small. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two German Cookbooks Compared. This one wins!
`The German Cookbook' by Mimi Sheraton and `The New German Cookbook' by Jean Anderson and Hedy Wurz are both written by leading American culinary writers. Although their publication dates are separated by thirty years, Ms. Sheraton's earlier book has been brought up to date at almost exactly the same time the newer book was published by Ms. Anderson and her co-author.

The raw numbers put Ms. Anderson at about 390 pages of recipes for a list price of $30 and Ms. Sheraton at about 500 pages of recipes for a list price of $35. Ms. Anderson includes an excellent bibliography of both English and German sources, including a reference to Ms. Sheraton's book. Ms. Sheraton has no bibliography, but includes the excellent feature of an English and a German index. Ms. Anderson includes a very nice glossary of German culinary terms. Ms. Sheraton's list of terms is much shorter, at the end of a short chapter on cooking utensils, which looks almost identical to such a section you would find in a good book on French recipes. In fact, it has a lot of similarities to a much more complete section in Julia Child's landmark `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' which appeared just a few years before Ms. Sheraton's book. While my primary objective is to compare the two German books, I will say at this point that neither comes close to matching the quality of Ms. Child's classic.

Ms. Sheraton, with the longer book, is claiming to be a complete guide to mastering authentic German cooking while Ms. Anderson specifically aims her book at `new' German cooking and avoids any claim to being a survey of all German cuisine (Ms. Sheraton does say, here and there, that there are some typical recipes which are simply so starchy and plain that she thinks they will be of no interest to American cooks, so she leaves them out). A quick look at the first few chapters confirms this assessment. In appetizers, Ms. Sheraton has 18 recipes while Ms. Anderson has but 10. In the next chapter on soups, Ms. Sheraton has 38 recipes while Ms. Anderson has but 25. And, Ms. Sheraton follows her soup chapter with a chapter on soup garnishes.

Which of these two books one may wish to buy has a lot to do with what you want from a `German cookbook'. I happen to be from a German and Pennsylvania German background, so I am looking for a wide variety of recipes for classic German and Austrian dishes. For this, I certainly prefer Ms. Sheraton's more complete coverage. I think the most typical buyer may be interested in a few famous German / Austrian recipes such as Sauerbraten, Sauerkraut, Spatzle, Wiener Schnitzel, Sausage dishes, and Strudel (It is entirely coincidental that all of these dishes start with an `S'). A comparison of all these dishes in both books shows that in every case, not only does Ms. Sheraton have more recipes, her recipes are also more complete.

One place where this is most dramatic is in the recipes for strudel. Ms. Anderson gives but one recipe for strudel, calling it a `Bavarian Strudel', and accurately stating that it is less like the classic Austro-Hungarian dish than like a cobbler. And, rather than giving a homemade recipe for the dough, Ms. Anderson's recipe uses frozen filo dough. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, as long as you are not buying her book to get a good classic strudel dough recipe. Ms. Sheraton does give us a full recipe for the classic Austrian strudel dough plus recipes for apple, cheese, cherry, plum, poppy seed, rhubarb, and Tyrolean strudel. Everything but cabbage strudel (however, there is a sauerkraut strudel recipe under sauerkraut recipes)! With sausage dishes, the picture is similar. Ms. Anderson has but three sausage dishes while Ms. Sheraton gives us ten.

Ms. Sheraton's recipes do tend to be just a bit more concise than those in Ms. Anderson's book. This is understandable since Ms. Sheraton says at the outset that her book assumes you know your way around the kitchen and know in practical terms, the difference between blanch and poach, for example. And yet, with very important recipes such as with sauerbraten and spatzle, two dishes which require considerably more than the average amount of technique, Ms. Sheraton's recipes are more descriptive than those from Ms. Anderson.

It is entirely appropriate that Ms. Anderson's co-author is a German travel writer, as one of the things in `The New German Cookbook' which is missing from `The German Cookbook' are sidebar stories describing the origins of most recipes.

The bottom line for all of this for Ms. Anderson's book is that it is very similar to a cookbook of recipes from a popular modern German restaurant. And, restaurant cookbooks are bought primarily to supply the reader with new ways of doing classic dishes and cute stories of how the executive chef came by the recipes. The main difference is that unlike recipes from great French and Italian restaurants, the recipes in Anderson's book are primarily simplified versions of the classics rather than fancy new twists.

Really want good recipes from the authentic, traditional German cuisine, get Ms. Sheraton's book. If you are so devoted to German recipes that Sheraton's book simply does not supply enough variety, get both books. Both books give good sketches of wine and beer production in Germany and there is little redundancy. Ms. Sheraton adds the extra touches of recipes for wine and beer based drinks and punches.

Ms. Sheraton's book is a reasonable addition for German cuisine to the great one volume treatments of ethnic cuisines done by Diane Kochilas on Greece, Diana Kennedy or Rick Bayless on Mexico, Penelope Casas on Spain, Barbara Tropp or Virginia Lee on China, Shizuo Tsuji on Japan, and Jean Anderson on Portugal!

Recommended as a standard on its subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geschmack!
This book will actually teach you HOW to cook....great for learners. The directions are excellent in each recipe. After growing up with German ancestors, and living there for 2 years.....I learned to LOVE German food. The book will help you replicate those tastes again.
Our favorite is the "Roast Saddle of Venison" on p.240
and try the Frankfurter Goulash on p.254
The Cabbage Roll recipe on p. 294 won us a prize in a contest!
The Germans do the best soups too!
    Trinkspruch!

5-0 out of 5 stars bringing the classics home
After looking at many German cookbooks and receiving recipes from friends, a family friend found an older copy of this in storage. She immediately thought of my stay in Germany and sent the book my way. First of all, all the measurements are in American terms!Never again will you need to convert grams of sugar/flour to cups.If you aren't fluent in German, it's also a great help to have all the culinary terms in English (braised, sauted, roasted, etc.).If you still are unsure, the introduction shares types over cooking methods and terms. The best part is that the index and glossary are cross-referenced in both English and German, allowing you to find that old family favorite, for which you don't know the English name!

Additionally, I have yet to try a recipe from it that DIDN'T closely match what I sampled in Germany. The variations are accurate clips of regional flair within certain recipes.I've also found that you can improve on the directions -- if you're a veteran, it's easy to do and if you're a novice when it comes to German cooking, the directions are detailed, but still easy to follow.I'm never letting this book go!I've recently shared it with local friends (I live in a region that is largely German heritage - nearby town still speaks a dialect), they were astonished by the book's accuracy in ingredients and scope of recipes.German approved, American approved. Can't get much better than that! ... Editorial Review

Whether you call that German-by-way-of-Genoa hybrid of dumpling and pasta spaetzle, spatzle, spatzen, or just "that dough stuff you drop into boiling broth," the folks at Norpro have fashioned a reasonably efficient way to prepare it. With their stainless-steel spaetzle maker--essentially a bottomless mining-car basket that runs along a flat cheese grater with bigger holes--cooks can load their favorite combo of egg/flour/milk (recipes for two spaetzle doughs are included) into the basket. By running the "mining car" along the rails of the stainless-steel grater, the batter is extruded into the waiting pot of boiling water or stock. At least, that's the theory: while the plastic basket is bottomless, it's also topless, meaning that, depending on the consistency of the batter, you may need to push it through the grater by hand--a bit daunting over a boiling pot. The grater base is also attached to a plastic handle via plastic tabs; one wishes for one-piece construction, though no doubt anall-stainless-steel fabrication would involve dropping a different kind of dough. --Tony Mason ... 5-0 out of 5 stars quick and easy...
    What a wonderful tool...

Easy to use, quick and doesn't use up lots of space.
Definitely the way to make spaetzle (or Knoepli as
    they are called in Switzerland).

This is definitely one of those speciality tools
that's worth having, because there's nothing else
that works as nicely and it makes the job SO much
    easier!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars does the job
It's a pretty simple appliance, it sure does make spaetzle.I've used the recipie included several times and it comes out pretty darned good. It's a little pain to clean, but that goes with the territory when working with spaetzle batter.Lots of watter and soaking and it is fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love My Spaeztle Maker!!
A decade or so ago I toured through Europe and while in Germany I was introduced to Spaetzle. It was love at first bite.I live in a small town in California and spaetzle is not easy to come by.I bought an instant package of spaetzle, and followed the directions (pour contents of box into boiling water...) and it was terrible. Finally I decided to shop around for a Spaetzle maker and the only one I could find cost a fortune and was incredibly big and awkward, I imagined scraping my knuckles off and gave up my dreams of having fresh spaetzle.Imagine my surprise and delight when I found this simple spaetzle maker here on Amazon.com and at such a friendly price.I ordered it right before the holidays and it arrived in time for Christmas dinner. We eat our Christmas feast early in the afternoon and for a light dinner I love to make turkey soup from leftover Christmas turkey. For a twist I decided to add some fresh spaetzle and it was a wonderful success. The maker came with two simple recipes and after a couple attempts, I mastered the spaetzle maker.Since then we eat spaetle often with gravy's, soups, and tons of other dishes. This is a great deal for such a wonderful tool that will inhance you meals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Totally incorrect, but totally awesome.
The information on this cd is indeed incorrect.39 tracks are listed, but only about 23 are on the cd.Some of those songs even repeat. That logic has been proven correct.QED

However, I don't care. This cd has some of the best atmosphere for celebrating Oktoberfest I've ever heard. We used to do a radio show on WNUR in Chicago, and this made for fantastic background music.Catchy polkas, loud groups singing, corks popping, raucous toasts, hooting- pure atmosphere. It delivers what the title says. Know these things going in, catch it at a decent price, and hopefully you won't be disappointed. We still use it on trips to the wine country- makes me laugh every time.

1-0 out of 5 stars misinformation
The CD which comes in this case is actually A CD by the same name with the picture of a German Beer maid on the front cover. This is very disappointing because the advertised CD is far superior.

1-0 out of 5 stars misinformation
Be careful. There are two CDs with the same name, this one and one with a german beer maid on the front cover. All of these reviews reflect the cd with the German girl. I bought this cd expecting about 40 tunes, and I got the other CD in this cover (Munich street).I was obviously disappointed. This is a real problem for those who play the CD and are no longer able to return it. ... My heating element wentout after 3 uses.Rival wanted me to ship the entire unit plus [$] to get a new one. They wouldn't accept my offer to send just the shell/heating portion(much lighter to ship).needless to say after several emails with the same Customer service person I have NOTHING.Dont by a Rival, try Westbend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good...unless you need customer service
I recently broke my stoneware insert. If this happens to you, just go buy another crockpot, DON'T try to replace the insert. The Rival people sent the wrong size twice, as well as a bunch of other things I had not ordered, and when I asked for my credit card to be refunded, they did not respond.Luckily my credit card company was more helpful, or I would have paid for that stuff!I kept trying with them until my letter to the Rival president received no response--then I went out and bought a Hamilton-Beach.It's great, by the way....

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable crock pot
If you haven't seen your crock pot for a couple of decades, dig it out of the back of the gadget cupboard & try it again. If you're looking for a new one, this is an excellent candidate.I got this one when my old cheap-o crock pot finally gave up the ghost, and I use it continually. The cool-touch exterior really does stay cool (my old crock got so hot I had to move everything away from it while I was cooking -- what a relief to not have to do that anymore). Also, it's quite large, big enought to fit an 8-lb turkey breast. The lid is a good, tight fit, which is the most crucial thing in crock pot cooking.I'm loving mine, you'll love it too :-) ... Some of the best-known German folk music songs are assembled on this 24-track celebratory album, including Maxl Graf's version of "In München Steht ein Hofbräuhaus" and the Gurktaler Musikanten's "Ramba Zamba." This is a perfect album to lend an Oktoberfest-Stimmung (Oktoberfest mood) to your party, and an excellent excuse to drink beer. It's the bane of every potluck dinner--how to keep those main dishes hot on the way there and during the program or party while waiting for dinner to begin. This insulated carrying case was designed for use with Crock-Pot slow cookers, and keeps filled Crock-Pots hot for up to two hours. The case specifically fits 4-quart models 3104 and 3154, 5-quart models 3355 and 3550, and 6-quart model 3656, but most slow cookers from other manufacturers would also fit in the case, as well as large round or oval casserole dishes. The design includes sturdy handles that snap together to tote the heavy bag and two thick elastic bands inside the carrier that fit over the Crock-Pot and hold it in place during transit. It is very well constructed and is durable.I use it with my other slow cookers and it is perfect for the NESCO 6 quart roaster oven as well. But because it is well insulated, you can use it as a tote for your potato salad or potatoes au gratin. It also serves as a tote for whatever items you need to transport. The snap-together handles are a particular asset.

For the price, you can't go wrong. You will like this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Are you bringing your Sausage and Lentil Soup again?"
Now that friends and family know I have a Rival Crock-Pot Traveler, I can't say "No" anymore.

The Traveler for Large Crock-Pots zips open to reveal an insulated storage space for any 4 to 6 quart round Crock-Pot or other stoneware slow cooker.A pair of elastic straps hold the lid down and the snap-together handle straps make the Traveler self-balancing when you pick it up.

Set it on the floor of the family car and if you drive judiciously enough, it'll get a pot of soup, chili or stew to your destination without losing a single drop.If you have to slam on the brakes or happen to take a turn a tad too tightly, the Traveler will contain the spill, which will be minimal.

The Crock-Pot Traveler can be turned inside-out for easier cleaning, should you need to mop up a spill. It's also insulated well enough to keep the contents hot for at least 2 hours, so now you CAN take hot German potato salad to a picnic and enjoy it HOT.When it's not in use, the Traveler can either serve as a dust-resistant cover for your slow cooker, or you can fold it up and tuck it into a linen drawer or a kitchen cabinet.

And since a few of you are wondering about that Sausage and Lentil Soup, here's the recipe:

    SAUSAGE AND LENTIL SOUP

    1 large onion, chopped
    1 bulb garlic, minced
    1 lb. dry lentils
    2 tsp. Italian seasoning
2 14.5 oz. cans chicken broth
    2 broth cans water
1 lb. sweet or hot turkey Italian sausage, whole links
    2 bay leaves

Combine onion, garlic, lentils, Italian seasoning, broth, and water in slow cooker.Add sausage links and float bay leaves on top.Cover and cook 10 hours on Low.Discard bay leaves.Remove sausage links and allow to cool 15 minutes.Meanwhile, stir soup for 2 minutes to puree' some of the lentils, which will thicken the soup.Slice cooled sausage and return to soup.Serve with biscuits or cornbread for a "meal in a bowl." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars watch out for the hot spot
I bought this with high expectations but was disappointed because when I use it on my gas stove, it tends to get a hot spot in the center where your soup/stew can BURN.No fun. It's great for the oven though so I now brown everything in a separate pot, then pour everything into this one and throw it in to bake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Saucier
I have owned my 8.5 qt. pot for over a year.I, however, got it for $50!It is an excellent piece for things like pot roast or reductions. The outsides and bottoms of the hard annodized surfaces get ugly but who cares! It is a tool!

I own ten pieces of Calphaloncookwear. Two skillets are non stick for things like eggs where I do not want browning.Calphalon is darn nice cookwear that is a joy to use, especially if all one has used is cheap cookwear.

All in all, this is a nice, VERY WIDE, pot.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was surprised at the diameter of this pan
I was not expecting this pan to be as large in diameter as it is.Previously owned pots where more vertical in this size instead of wide.I have fixed mostly soups in this pot.I have really liked its performance. My only complaint is that it seems to have a whitish looking spot the center bottom of the pan that doesn't clean up very good.My overall satisfaction with the item is good.I have had no problem with anything sticking in the pan either.I would certainly recommend it.Cooking with a wide pot is quicker than the taller ones. ... I remember the excitement of opening my high school graduation gift from Aunt Beatrice. It was this book.My Aunt B assured me that this book was the key to a fulfilling and successful college career. As I begin my junior year, I reflect on my college times thus far and realize that Aunt B was right.

This book definitely helped make the transition from high school to college a smooth one.I was able to participate in all the fun games on campus with working knowledge of the correct rules. In a few cases, I was able to introduce upperclassmen to new games and intervene/referee during controversial moments in play.

In just a few months, my little brother will be graduating from high school and embarking on his college experience.I will be purchasing this vital reference volume for him.How proud he will be to put this book alongside his dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia set. This book is an excellent gift for a new grad, a college kid, or a middle-aged guy needing to brush up on his favorite games.Bottoms Up!!

    Editorial Review

A cook's knife is the indispensable backbone of any cutlery collection. It performs a wide variety of cutting chores, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The heavy 10-inch blade of this definitive example provides sturdy heft so the knife rather than the cook does most of the work. The extra blade length makes quick work of all cutting jobs. The knife looks formidable, but it's a pleasure to hold and use--a true kitchen friend.

Part of the Classic series, this knife represents two centuries of unexcelled Wüsthof craftsmanship. Like other cutlery in the series, it's hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blade is exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when it's honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe and with a traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handle that is triple-riveted for durability, this knife brings a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to any cook who owns it. --Arthur Boehm ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cry once...
Yes, the price of a Wusthof Classic is intimidating, and yes, you will feel buyer's remorse...until you use it for the first time. Even for the casual cook, the difference between a Wusthof and even a middlin' fair brand must be experienced to be appreciated. I bought one for my father (who never gets excited about ANY present, ever) for Christmas; and he hasn't stopped thanking me yet. That in itself made it well worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book
I bought this book at Milwaukee's Germanfest several years ago, and I consider it a lucky find. The quotes and information about German holidays and customs, are just delightful! And the recipes bring back many memories of time we spent in Germany.

It is worth getting the book for the brötchen recipe alone. We thought we'd never see good brötchen outside of Germany. Now we can make it at home!

I especially appreciated having this book when I was preparing holiday meals for my now-late German-born father-in-law.He was very pleased as well.

The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients that are easy to find in America. The binding allows you to open the book and lay it down flat - very handy while you're cooking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This cookbook is equivalent to a Junior League collection of recipes from Midwest, USA.Ingredients such as margarine, hot dogs, garlic salt, dried mixed vegetables, cheddar cheese, and abundant use of bouillon cubes reflect a cook who has not progressed beyond elementary food preparation skill.
The formatting of the "self published" book is not easy to read and inconsistent. Accompanying tips, quotes and histories are out of place.
I would imagine though that the books reflects a certain kind of German cooking, just not one I'd want any part of.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Finally !!!
Finally, a cookbook that contains the recipes for some of the foods that I grew up with. I highly recommend this book. The first recipe I tried was the mischbrot. WOW!!! It turned out exactly as I remembered the fresh and aromatic loaf of bread that I picked up from the neighborhood baker in Germany. All of the other recipes are faithfully authentic (from my point of view) even tho some do not include the necessary caraway seeds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be in any foodie's backpack on a trip to Germany
I may know the names of typical German dishes, but that doesn't help me decipher a menu when I'm visiting a restaurant in Germany. With a limited amount of time (and thus a finite opportunity to pig out on regional specialties), I wanted to make sure I was picking the best stuff to eat.

We took this slender tome with us on our last trip, and we were extremely glad we did. What's this dessert prepared with Muskatnuss? Ah, nutmeg! How do I ask for a hard-boiled egg at breakfast? (If you don't specify, I learned, you get it soft-boiled.) And so on.

We definitely had fewer surprises. And we able to order what we really wanted. The book also includes a section on regional specialties, so we knew enough to order Maultaschen when we had the opportunity to do so, not to mention an idea of what would arrive on the plate.

In addition to the Hungry Traveler Germany, I also have the Marling Menu-Master Germany (which appears to be out of print, alas). Both are very good, earning 5-stars unquestionably, though this book is a bit larger (and thus may be awkward to carry; it fits okay in a fanny pack). If I had to choose, I'd take the Marling book with me on a trip, because it's organized by restaurant menu sections, rather than alphabetically. It's also small enough to fit in a pocket.

This one, though, has little extras that make it worth reading all the way through. For example, it warns you not to try to bring back any meat products (which I should have read before trying to bring home Black Forest Ham), and suggests made-in-Germany food related specialties that won't bother Customs at all (ranging from Christmas gingerbread to cutlery and table linens).

5-0 out of 5 stars German words for German food
It's a pleasure to browse through this guide.

It's just the thing to use to translate Deutsche Spezialitaten, the German-language version of Culinaria Germany, the lush, big food book that describes the delicious cuisine of Germany, region by region, or you can use it in a German supermarket to decipher labels. Plus, it's handy for translating German menus.

At 289 pages, it's a bit too thick to carry in a pocket, next to your body. Plus, it's a bit fragile, with its paper covers and perfect binding. So carry it in a purse, fanny pack, jacket- or cargo pocket. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foods, Festivals and Folklore
Distinctly German, but Germany's Regional Recipes: Foods, Festivals, Folklore by Helga Hughes characterizes the unique aspects of each state and its contribution to the national culture and food traditions of Germany.

Coming to the United States from Germany in 1961, Helga Hughes is a successful physical educator, pilot, chef, and author of numerous cookbooks. This book evolved from a desire to share, as well as to learn more about the customs and foods of her native country. To that end, Helga and her late husband Ken traveled and explored the cities and countryside of Germany. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The result is this collection of authentic recipes cultivated by geographical and historical influences. Some legendary reference is noted also with foods associated with special events and festivities.

There is Black Forest Cherry Cake from Baden-Württemberg in the upper Rhine Valley; cooking with beer in Bavaria; Berlin Frikadellen, an early version of the American hamburger; the spicy tastes of Brandenburg; seafood of Bremen and Hamburg, and a continuing list of flavors and tastes of the other regions. A special section includes traditions and foods associated with holidays and national celebrations. Karin Gottier, German folklorist, details a traditional Christmas in Germany, and the origin of many customs now celebrated worldwide.

Lovingly compiled by Helga and Ken Hughes, this volume was historically referenced further by Dr. Eberhard Reichmann, former director of the University of Indiana Institute for Germanic Studies. Dr. Ruth Reichmann assisted also in additional editorial material.

Wursts, pretzels, marvelous breads, desserts, and many more popular tastes that have extended beyond the borders of Germany are included.

Line-drawings illustrate unique designs for special events and occasions.

Colorful front and back cover photographs by Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret are of nutcrackers from the collection of Karin Gottier. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The reason why German albums sold in North America are so often compilations of beer-drinking songs such as this compilation of 14 all-time favorites from the Bavarian Beer Singers is that drinking beer is very important in Germany. Not because the beer is so good, indeed a good reason per se, but because it is a venue to socialize and enjoy the company of other people. All Germans know most if not all of these songs by heart--from "Trink, Trink, Brüderlein Trink" to "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit"--and they can evoke homesickness or nostalgia. The liner notes give these instructions "How to enjoy this album":

Pour yourself a stein of beer.
    Turn on the compact disc.
Sit down in a comfortable chair, take a sip of beer, close your eyes, and visualize the scene.

They've got it almost right--this is really music to sing with other people, so after you pour your beer and put the CD on--sit down with a good friend or a few to enjoy. --Erik Macki ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Know Ol' Dipper Would Approve!!!
As several people I know will verify, I loooove beer, I like singing (and do it loudly and poorly), and I have a fondness for the frauleins.I also have a fairly extensive collection of German Beer Hall music and am rather pleased to have found this nicely-priced gem for the offing.

For starters, the cover contains what is surely a dead ringer for my old drinking buddy Dipper Lips. The songs have an Ol' Dipper ring to them as well--lots of hunting songs, all drinking songs, and songs of general merriment altogether. That's an ace in the hole.Another plus is the price. It's a pretty full disc and the sound quality is about on par with most of these discs (i.e., average).Crowd noise is a tad loud (you won't notice after your second stein) and (of course) the singing is all in German (I don't speak a lick, but thisn't doesn't detract from the fun--just reminds me of the days I used to spend in the German beer halls during my "fugue of discovery" when I was in my early twenties). The only real negative is the liner notes don't contain the lyrics (let alone a translation).

In spite of the few minor drawbacks, I found this collection of fun songs to be well worth the price and a great companion for lonely drinking daze. And I am still certain that's my old chum Dipper on the cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best to Enjoy When Drunk
This compilation of 14 German drinking songs has lots of noise and merry-making in the background. It is obvious that the singers are having a good time, having partaken liberally in the products of the Braumeister (or so it would seem).

While the songs include all the favorites of German Kneipekriecheren (pubcrawlers), which all good Bavarians know by heart, the loud party noises makes the lyrics difficult to understand, even if you're fluent in Deutsch. My personal favorites include "Bier Hier" (misspelled in the liner notes) and "In Munich Steht ein Hofbrauhaus."

What the heck.Pour yourself a Hefe-Weisen or three and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Live Beer Hall sound
This CD has a good mix of songs, all of which have crowd noise in the background.Good if your party is not too well attended! But the CD quality skipped a bit on my computer. Also, there were no lyrics enclosed, which disappointed me. ... Read more
